Auntie Geek's Guide to All things Cyber - Dating Sites

Be as circumspect on a Dating Site as you would in a Strange Bar.  Do not believe that you are safe or protected or that there is any 'magic'  in Computer Matching.

Firstly, predators live on Dating Sites Whether a Nigerian Scam artiste, a Ted Bundy, a pederest, or garden variety sicko, these sites are their home.  This is because the member needs, (or believes) to be 'honest'.

Where you can be Worf on every message board, and claim to live in Outer Mongolia, and give your age 110, on a dating site you admit you are Nikki Blaustein, live in Brooklyn, and are 22 years old.  After all, you're look for a man between 22 and 34 who lives within ten miles of your door step.

Once getting your real name it is an easy consult of a phone book.  How many N. Blausteins live in Brooklyn?  And if there are a number, it is easy, with a few questions; "Are you near the IRT?"  "Did you go to Erasmus?" to get a more specific locale.

Secondly, the impression that you are desperate begins the second you join that site.  People don't join dating sites to discuss political variabilities, the Euro crisis, the best oil to use in a Yamaha 175 Dirt Bike.  They join to find someone to love them.   Predators will create a delightful persona.

"34 year old professional who loves sailing, travelling, and needs someone to live with him in his five bedroom house."   Yah.   How about 53 year old sicko who wants an all expense vacation in your house?

Thirdly, don't believe the photographs you see, and don't post any which identifies your location, your licence number, (those cute car pictures are out) or anything about you.  Photoshopping is too easy to describe.  Better a cute puppy you got off the 'Net for now.

Fourthly, and here is where your bubble is about to go "POP', there is no Matching being done.  Outside of the most general (women who are looking for a man are being matched with men, race/religion if made important).   Simply put, they may weed out those over 60 and under 30 if you specify, but that's about it.

Fifthly, this is a site to make money, lots of money.  It is a site which exists to make money.   It hires two models to pose and claim they met each other on the dating site, claim to have 847,875 members, but in truth, you'd do better to ask your best friend to 'fix you up'.
